«He was a beautiful person and looked after his mum and his family and cared about his children and just wanted to progress to a better life,» said his cousin, Sharni Hutchings.

Police executed search warrants in Doncaster and Park Orchards on Sunday afternoon.

The shooting was across the road from the Corpus Christi Aged Care centre, where people had to move behind police tape to visit their relatives on Saturday.

It was also close to a children’s park in Carlson Reserve, where a group of young people spent the morning training at the sports oval.

Al Wong said he played cricket at the reserve most Saturdays. «It’s very, very different from what you’d normally expect in this area,» he said.

«This area is a very family-orientated place. There’s a playground, the tennis club [and] a lot of university students live around here as well.»

Police spent most of Saturday at the scene, combing the apartment for clues.
