Quebec’s Education Ministry has finally nailed down the official definition of recess.

Education Minister Jean-François Roberge announced Tuesday that beginning next school year, the province’s elementary schools will be required to schedule two daily recess periods lasting a minimum of 20 minutes each.

At the moment, while the Régime pédagogique de l’éducation préscolaire, de l’enseignement primaire et de l’enseignement secondaire does call for two recess periods, the duration of those breaks has never been officially designated.

The announcement is based on research that indicates outdoor physical activity improves the overall health of students and allows them to concentrate more fully once they’re back in class.
