Clooney and his wife attended Markle’s wedding to Diana’s son, Prince Harry, last year.
Clooney made the comments at the Television Critics Association conference in Pasadena, California, while promoting his upcoming Hulu series Catch-22.
The series, an adaptation of Joseph Heller’s classic WWII-set novel, will see Clooney returning to TV for the first time in 20 years for what he calls a timeless story about the «insanity» of war.
The actor said he initially resisted the idea of taking on the iconic book about member of a US bomber squadron fighting military bureaucracy.
«It’s a beloved novel… I didn’t want to get into the middle of that,» Clooney, who also served as executive producer and directed two episodes, said.
He said he was drawn in because the writers «did an amazing job unspooling these characters» for the series, to be released May 18 in Australia.
The series was co-written by Australian screenwriter, and Lion Oscar nominee, Luke Davies.
«I think we all wake up every morning these days in this kind of shared global anxiety condition, and this novel is a beautiful distillation, or a prophetic distillation of that,» Davies added during the conference panel.
Clooney, 57, last appeared on television in 2000 as Dr. Doug Ross in hit medical drama ER, before building a successful film career.
